Land and Sea

Xoana creates a piece that deals with “Land and Sea” (“Terra e mar”). As usual, she pays tribute to the working women of Galicia, in this case to the strength of unity and class consciousness. The mural shows us an image of two women facing each other joining their hands: one represents the work of the sea through a fishing net and the other the work of the land using the sickle. The work possesses an iconic power as it creates synthetic figures provided with a firm line and broad masses of color. It holds a certain similarity with some authors of the Galician illustration of the mid-twentieth century.
Despite the synthetic and simplicity of the piece, the set has a great organicity due to the treatment of the textures present throughout the mural, which may recall the finishes of the engraving, all reinforced by the contrast and symbolism between the cold ranges of the figure on the left and the warm ones on the right. The mural is located at 5, Salgueiros Street.
