Bouguereau was the maximum exponent of the French academicism of the 19th century and a teacher of the anatomical plastic treatment and of the skin. The Abduction of Psique is perhaps one of his more emblematic pictures. Van Vúu, with just 28 years old, is already a virtuoso in the resolution of the peculiar images that he chooses for his pictorial works. Floro dominates his own language with big skill and rapidity in these large-scale walls. “You just have to see the bastard at work”, one passer-by comented in Carballo while he was painting…
This mural is perhaps a lot of things at the same time. A zoom with the scroll of the mouse to an anthological picture; a tribute to painting itself; a homage to the techniques of the former masters that he admires; a singing to all the embraces that we have not given during the pandemic; or perhaps, it is dedicated to the kidnapping of all these stolen hugs, who knows? We cannot imagine if William-Adolphe would have ever thought that a 21st century punk like Iván Floro, aka Van Vúu, would have dared to desecrate his work and, at the same time, elevate it, zooming it out and increasing its scale. In fact, Floro trolled both Bouguereau and himself before anybody came to do it. But the question is that it has been done, and it was during in the Rexenera Fest 2021, in Carballo. Besides, it looks like tribal tattoos are on-trend again…
